Can a shift run past midnight?

Yes. Nothing closes it at midnight, which is exactly what late night restaurants need. A shift ends when a person ends it. Your reports still cut days by your own timezone, so a shift that opens at 8pm and closes at 3am appears in the shifts list on the day it closed.
