Can I take a gift card at the counter?

Yes. Gift card is one of the ways to pay on the Charge screen. The cashier types the code and the amount, and the balance comes down when the sale goes through. If money is later given back on that sale, it returns to the same card that paid, read from the sale itself rather than typed in again.
