Can I turn the automatic yearly renewal off?

Yes, from Settings, Plan and billing, in the panel called The POS. With it off, the devices simply stop on the paid until date unless you renew before, and the same four reminders still reach you. You can also renew early: paying ahead adds the year onto the end of what you already have rather than losing the rest.
