Can the POS talk to my card machine directly?

Not yet, and we would rather say so than promise it. Today every restaurant's machine is typed by hand: the cashier keys the amount on the machine, reads the answer, and the POS records how it was paid. That is exactly why the shift close asks for the machine's batch total, so the two sides can be checked against each other every night.
