Do I need a printer at all?

No. With no printer the receipt is shown on the screen for the customer to read, and you can send it to their WhatsApp if they want to keep it. Plenty of small cafes run exactly like that. Add a printer later and nothing else changes: the same receipt, built by the same code you see previewed on the Printing and receipts page.
