Each way of paying has a tick called Opens the cash drawer. Cash has it on, a card machine does not. When a sale is charged with something that carries the tick, the POS sends the pulse to the drawer through the printer or through the terminal's own port. You can also open it for a movement that is not a sale, such as adding change or paying a supplier in cash.
