How much float should I put in the drawer?

Enough small notes and coins to give change through a busy hour. Count what is really there rather than typing a round number you would like it to be, because the closing count measures against exactly what you typed. A float that was wrong at the start makes an honest shift look short at the end, and nobody can tell the two apart afterwards.
