If my plan payment fails, do I lose the POS as well?

No, and that is deliberate. Your web dashboard locks while the plan is unpaid, but you paid for the POS separately, so the machines at the counter carry on selling and everything they take is safe. The two locks are kept apart on purpose. Sort the plan out from Settings, Plan and billing and the dashboard comes straight back.
