What is the difference between a void and a refund?

A void cancels a sale that was never paid for. A refund gives money back on a sale that was. They are different events with different money, so the POS keeps them apart: try to void something already paid and it tells you to refund it instead, and try to refund something unpaid and it tells you to void it.
