Can a customer pay half in cash and half by card?

Yes. On the Charge screen add a line for each way of paying and put an amount on each. The POS refuses anything under the total and says exactly how much is short, and works out the change when the cash side is over. Each part is stored separately, so your Z report shows what came in as cash and what came in through the card machine.
