Can a table pay half now and half later?

No. A charge has to cover what is owed on that table or that bill, and the screen tells you exactly how much is short. That is what splitting is for: make a bill for the part somebody is paying now, take it, and the rest stays on the table. One charge can still mix ways of paying, some cash and the rest on the card machine.
