The card machine total does not match the POS. What does that mean?

Usually one of two things: a sale went through the machine and was never rung up, or a sale was rung up as card and actually paid another way. Neither is a fault in the arithmetic. Compare the card lines on the Z report against the machine's own slip for that shift and the odd one out is normally obvious.
