Tables, tabs and the kitchen screen

Restaurant table management: a drawn floor plan, tabs and rounds, split bills, a kitchen display screen, table QR codes, bookings and the waitlist.

Read the walkthrough script for this guide
  1. Settings, Tables and QR ordering. Add each table the way your staff say it: a name, where it is, and how many seats. Inside, Terrace, Roof: those words become the parts of your floor.
  2. Press Floor plan and drag each table to where it really stands. Wider, taller, round or square. Your POS machines and waiter phones then draw the same room, so a new waiter finds table 7 without asking anybody.
  3. On a waiter phone, the floor is the home screen. White is free, dark is an open table, amber means they have asked for the bill, and a free table shows the next booking on it in copper so nobody seats a walk-in at 19:50 on a table promised for 20:00.
  4. Tap a table to open it. Pick the food, press Send to kitchen, and that is round one. Come back later, add more, press it again, and that is round two. Every round is a separate ticket in the kitchen and one running tab on the table.
  5. The kitchen screen is the only dark screen we make, because it hangs on a wall in a hot room and is read from two metres away. Tap each dish as you plate it, and press Ready when the whole round is up.
  6. The moment the kitchen says Ready, the table appears under Waiting on you on the floor, so a runner picks it up instead of the food sitting under the lamp.
  7. Split the bill two ways. By item: tap a dish, tap the bill it belongs to, up to twelve bills. Or evenly: choose how many ways, and every share is the same to the fil.
  8. Charge the whole table, or each bill on its own. The table closes itself when every bill and the table's own money are in.
  9. Bookings. Switch on one table and a Book a table button appears on your ordering page. Guests pick a day, a time and how many, and it lands on your Reservations and waitlist page in the restaurant's own clock.
  10. The waitlist is the queue at the door. Add a name, a number and how many, and when a table frees up press Call: they get a WhatsApp saying their table is ready.

Step by step

Add your tables and draw the floor plan

The table list is what everything else is built on: the QR codes, the floor on your devices, and whether you can take bookings at all.

  1. Open Settings → Tables & QR ordering.
  2. In the Add table form, fill 'What staff call it' (12, Terrace 3), 'Where it is' (Inside, Terrace, Roof) and 'Seats' (1 to 40), then press Add table. The words you put in 'Where it is' become the parts of your floor, so keep them short and use the same ones every time.
  3. Repeat for every table. Two tables cannot share a name; adding one twice tells you so instead of making a duplicate.
  4. Press Floor plan in the page header.
  5. Pick an area at the top, then tap a table under 'Not on the plan yet' to drop it into the room.
  6. Drag it to where it really stands. With it selected, use Wider, Narrower, Taller, Shorter, and Make it round or Make it square. 'Take it off the plan' puts it back in the list.
  7. If two tables overlap, the page names them underneath and the Save button stays inert until you move one.
  8. Press Save the plan. Your POS machines and waiter phones draw the same room on their next refresh; any area you leave undrawn keeps the plain grid.

Open a table, send a round to the kitchen, and take the money

The everyday loop on a waiter phone or a POS machine. Nothing is stored on the device, so any of them can pick the table up.

  1. On the device, go to Tables. White tiles are free, dark tiles have an open tab, amber means they have asked for the bill.
  2. Tap a free table. It opens straight away and shows an empty tab.
  3. Press 'Add to this table', pick the dishes, answer any options, and use the note box for 'no onion' or 'less sugar'.
  4. Press 'Send to kitchen'. That is round 1: it prints and lands on the kitchen screen, and the stock for those dishes comes down at that moment.
  5. For mains later, press 'Add to this table' again and send again. Each send is another round, another kitchen ticket, and the tab shows them all with 'In the kitchen' or 'Served'.
  6. When they ask for the bill, press 'They asked for the bill'. The tile turns amber on every device.
  7. Press 'Charge AED …' to take the whole table, choose how they are paying, and give any change. The receipt prints, or shows on the screen if there is no printer.
  8. The table closes itself. If the kitchen has also said Ready, the order reads as delivered on your orders board.

Split a bill by item or evenly

Two different jobs. By item is for 'I only had the salad'; evenly is for four friends who want to stop arguing.

  1. Open the table and press 'Split the bill'.
  2. For separate bills, stay on 'By item'. Tap a dish in the list on the left, then tap the bill card it belongs to. Tap it again on the bill to take it off.
  3. Press '+ Another bill' for each extra person, up to twelve bills on one table. Anything you never assign stays on the table and is paid with the rest.
  4. For equal shares, press 'Evenly' and use the minus and plus buttons under 'How many ways?', from 2 to 20. Every share is the same and the odd fil goes on the first share.
  5. On each bill card press 'Take payment' and charge it. The card then reads Paid with the time on it.
  6. Carry on until every bill is paid. The table closes itself once every bill and the table's own money are in.
  7. Know the one thing you cannot undo: after a bill is paid you can still add bills by item, but you cannot switch to an even split and you cannot change how many ways.

Set up stations so each screen and printer gets its own dishes

A juice counter and a grill each get their own ticket. Do this once and the tickets sort themselves for ever.

  1. Open Settings → The POS → Printing & receipts and find 'Where each ticket prints'.
  2. Fill in 'Station name' (Grill, Drinks counter, Sweets), 'Its printer' (an address on your wifi, or a Bluetooth name) and 'Copies' (1 to 3), decide 'Also on the kitchen screen', then press 'Add the station'.
  3. Add one station for each place in your kitchen that cooks. A station can have a printer, or none.
  4. Open Your menu, and on each dish set 'Who cooks it' to the right station.
  5. The line at the bottom of Printing & receipts tells you how many dishes still have no station. Those print at the counter, which is right unless you have a second printer.
  6. On the kitchen screen, use the buttons across the top: Everything, then one for each station. Tap a station and that screen shows only its dishes.
  7. Nothing is ever lost: one order becomes one ticket per station, all carrying the same order number, and if a station's printer stops answering its dishes print at the counter with the station's name across the top.

Put a service charge on tables

Tables only, on its own line, with VAT on it as the law requires. Two fields and a Save.

  1. Open Settings → The POS and scroll to 'Service charge on tables'.
  2. Type a number in the 'Service charge' field. Anything from 0 to 20 percent, and 0 switches it off.
  3. Press Save. The line beside the field then reads 'Today: X% on every table' or 'Off today'.
  4. Check a table: the charge shows as its own line called 'Service charge' with the percentage, between the subtotal and the total, on the tab, on the bill and on the receipt.
  5. Remember two rules. Counter sales never carry it. And a table that is already open keeps the figure it had until its next round, so change it between services if you can.

Take bookings on your ordering page and run the waitlist

A booking is a promise for later; the waitlist is the queue at the door right now. Both live on one page.

  1. Make sure at least one table is switched on under Settings → Tables & QR ordering. With no tables the page tells you your ordering page is not offering bookings, and why.
  2. Look at your ordering page: a Book a table button now sits under the header, and it opens your booking form at your own address followed by /book.
  3. Open Orders → Reservations & waitlist. The three figures at the top are the bookings for the day you are looking at with the covers counted, how many are booked ahead, and how many are waiting now.
  4. Use the Day box and Show to look at another day; Today jumps back.
  5. When guests arrive, press Seat on their row and pick a table from the list beside the button. Use No-show after a reasonable wait, and Cancel when they ring to cancel. Anything wrong has an Undo.
  6. To take a booking over the phone, fill the Book form at the bottom: Name, People, When, Phone, an optional Table and Notes.
  7. For the queue at the door, use the 'Add to the list' form under Waitlist: Name, People, Phone and Notes.
  8. When a table frees up, press Call on their row. They get a WhatsApp saying their table is ready and to come to the host within ten minutes. Then press Seat and pick the table, or Left if they gave up.

Common questions

Do I need separate restaurant table management software?

No. Restaurant table management software is part of your plan here, not a second product to buy and connect: the same page that runs your menu and your orders holds your table list, your floor plan, your tabs and your bookings, and they all read the same tables.

Do I need separate restaurant reservation software?

No. Table reservation software is included: guests book on your own ordering page, and the bookings land on Orders → Reservations & waitlist, on the same day view your staff already use. There is no second login, no per-cover fee and no commission, and nobody has to copy a booking from one system into another.

Is there a table ordering system for waiters?

Yes. A waiter phone is a small POS: the floor, the tables, the menu and the tab all fit in a pocket. The waiter takes the order at the table and sends it straight to the kitchen, so nobody walks to a machine to type it in again. A guest ordering on the table's QR code and a waiter ordering on a phone end up in the same place: one tab on one table.

Does the POS come with a kitchen display?

Yes. A POS with a kitchen display is one add-on, not two: pair one device as a POS that sells and another as a screen in the kitchen, and the tickets go from one to the other. There is no limit on how many of each you pair.

How do I set up a QR code table menu?

Add your tables under Settings → Tables & QR ordering, then print the cards from QR design & print pack. Each card carries its own table's link, so a guest who scans it sees your menu with the table already known and orders without typing an address. Your normal restaurant link never offers table ordering, so only a scanned card can start one.

What is restaurant table management in Get Menu?

One floor, shared by every device. You list your tables, draw where they stand, and then any POS machine or waiter phone shows the same room: which tables are free, what is on each one, what is still owed and who is booked in next. Nothing lives on one device, so a table opened on a waiter's phone is on the counter screen a few seconds later.

How do I add my tables?

Open Settings → Tables & QR ordering and use the Add table form. Four things: 'What staff call it' (12, Terrace 3), 'Where it is' (Inside, Terrace, Roof), 'Seats' (1 to 40) and the sort order. Two tables cannot share a name, and adding the same name twice tells you so instead of making a duplicate.

Can I draw my restaurant's floor plan?

Yes. Settings → Tables & QR ordering → Floor plan. You get one grid per area, 24 cells across and 16 down. Drag a table to where it stands, then use Wider, Narrower, Taller, Shorter and Make it round to get the shape right. The POS machines and waiter phones then draw the same room.

How big can a table be on the floor plan?

From 1 cell to 8 cells in each direction. A two-seater is usually one or two cells; a long communal table can be eight. Nothing may overlap: if two tables sit on top of each other, the page lists them by name and the Save the plan button stays inert until you move one.

What happens to tables I have not placed on the plan?

They still show. Any area where at least one table has been placed is drawn as a room, and tables in that area with no position sit in a plain grid underneath it, so a table can never disappear from the floor by being forgotten. An area you never draw keeps the plain grid everywhere.

Do I need to redraw the plan when I move a table?

Only if you want the screens to match the room again. Drag it, press Save the plan, and the devices pick it up on their next refresh. The table keeps its name, its QR code and all of its history.

How does a waiter open a table?

Tap the table on the floor. If the table is free it opens a new tab; if it already has one, tapping it shows you what is on it. There is only ever one open tab per table, so two waiters cannot start two bills for the same guests.

What is a round?

One trip to the kitchen. The waiter picks dishes, presses Send to kitchen, and those dishes become round 1. Starters now, mains twenty minutes later, dessert after that: three rounds, three kitchen tickets, one tab. The tab shows each round with 'In the kitchen' or 'Served' beside it.

Can I add something that is not on the menu?

Yes. A round can carry a line you type by hand: a short name and a price. Use it for a bottle of water from the fridge or a one-off charge. It is not a menu dish, so it takes no stock, and it is worth typing the same name every time so your reports stay tidy.

Does sending a round take the stock?

Yes, at the moment it is sent, because the kitchen is already cooking it. If somebody sends more of a dish than you have left, the round is refused and the screen says how many are actually left, so nothing is promised twice.

How many dishes can go in one round?

Up to 100 lines at a time, and 1 to 50 of any one dish. That is far more than a real table needs; the limit exists so a stuck screen cannot fire a hundred repeats at the kitchen.

What does 'they asked for the bill' do?

It turns the table amber on the floor and puts it under Waiting on you, so whoever is nearest goes over. It is a stamp on the table itself, not a note on one phone, so every device sees it. Sending another round clears it again, because a table that just ordered dessert is no longer waiting to pay.

Can I move a table's bill to another table?

Yes. Open the table, press Move, then tap the free table it is going to. Everything moves with it: the rounds, the kitchen tickets and any bills already made. A table that already has a tab on it cannot be moved onto, and the screen tells you so.

Can I merge two tables?

Yes, when two parties join up. Open one table, press Merge and pick the other. Its rounds are added after the ones already there, keeping their order, and the emptied table closes with a note saying which table it joined. Merging is refused once a bill has been paid on either side, because paid money belongs to the table that took it.

How do I split a bill by item?

Open the table, press Split the bill and stay on 'By item'. Tap a dish on the left, then tap the bill it belongs to. Press '+ Another bill' for each extra person, up to twelve bills on one table. Anything you do not put on a bill stays on the table and is paid with the rest.

How do I split a bill evenly?

Press Split the bill, choose 'Evenly', then use the plus and minus buttons to set how many ways, from 2 to 20. Every share is the same amount and the odd fil goes on the first share, so the shares always add up to the table exactly.

Can I change the split after somebody has paid?

You can keep adding bills by item, but you cannot switch to an even split once a bill has been paid, and the number of ways is locked at that point. The screen says so rather than quietly renumbering money that has already gone in the drawer.

How does a split table close?

Each bill is charged on its own. The table closes by itself when every bill is paid and the table's own leftover money is in. If you try to charge the whole table while bills are open, it refuses and says to take each bill on its own.

Can I add a service charge to tables?

Yes. Settings → The POS, the 'Service charge on tables' section, the 'Service charge' field. Anything from 0 to 20 percent. It is added to every table's bill as its own line on the tab, the bill and the receipt, and 0 switches it off.

Does the service charge apply to counter sales?

No, never. It is a table charge only. A karak bought at the counter and taken away carries no service charge, which is the usual arrangement and the one the screens assume.

Is VAT charged on the service charge?

Yes, as the law requires. VAT sits inside the total with the service charge included, because the charge is part of what the guest pays for the meal.

I changed the service charge but an open table still shows the old one. Why?

A table that is already open keeps the figure it was last worked out with until its next round. Send another round, or close and reopen the table, and it picks up the new percentage. New tables use the new figure straight away.

What is the kitchen display system?

A tablet or screen in the kitchen, paired to your restaurant, showing every order as a ticket: counter sales, table rounds, orders guests placed on the table QR code, orders from your ordering page and orders from delivery apps. One ticket per round, in the order they arrived.

What does the cook tap on the kitchen screen?

Two things. Tap a dish as you finish it, and tap it again if you ticked the wrong one. Then press Ready when the whole round is up. That is the whole job: there is no cancelling, no discounting and no refunding on the kitchen screen, because none of that is the kitchen's work.

How does the kitchen screen show me what is late?

By colour, so it reads from across the room. A ticket in its first minute has a green edge and a JUST IN badge. Past about five minutes the clock turns amber. Past eight minutes the whole card turns red, header and all, because a border alone is not enough from two metres away.

Can the kitchen screen show only one station?

Yes. Across the top there is Everything, then a button for each station you have set up. Tap one and the screen shows only that station's dishes, and hides orders that have none of them, so the grill screen is not full of drinks.

What are stations, and how do I set them up?

A station is a place that cooks: the grill, the juice counter, sweets. Set them up under Settings → The POS → Printing & receipts, in 'Where each ticket prints'. Then open Your menu and set 'Who cooks it' on each dish. One order becomes one ticket per station, and every ticket carries the same order number so you can see it is one order in two halves.

What happens to a dish with no station?

It prints at the counter, and it shows on a kitchen screen set to Everything. That is the right answer unless you have a second printer. The Printing & receipts page tells you how many of your dishes still have no station set.

What if a station's printer stops answering?

Its dishes print at the counter instead, with the station's name across the top of the ticket. Nothing is dropped silently, so a dead printer costs you a walk rather than a missing order.

The cook has run out of a dish. Can they take it off themselves?

Yes, and they should. Press 'Something has run out' on the kitchen screen, pick the dish and say how many are still possible. It comes off the ordering page and the POS at once, and it comes back on its own at the end of your day, so nobody has to remember to put it back.

How do I know when food is ready to carry out?

The floor tells you. When the kitchen presses Ready, that table appears under 'Waiting on you' with the table name, the round and how long ago it was called. It sits there for fifteen minutes, which is long enough to be picked up and short enough not to become wallpaper. Tap it to go straight to the table.

Does the kitchen screen ping or ring?

No. It refreshes itself every ten seconds and shows a new ticket with a green edge and a JUST IN badge. In a real kitchen a sound is either ignored or unbearable, so the screen shouts with colour instead.

Does a note about an allergy stand out?

Yes. If the note on an order mentions an allergy, the kitchen ticket lifts it out into its own warning line above the dishes, rather than leaving it buried under a dish.

Can the kitchen accept or refuse a delivery app order?

Yes. An order from a delivery platform that is waiting for an answer shows 'Accept the order' and 'Refuse' on its own ticket, so the kitchen answers it without anybody walking to a tablet on the wall.

What happens after the kitchen presses Ready?

It depends on the order. A counter sale or a table that is already paid for is finished, and reads as delivered on your orders board instead of sitting in the live list for ever. A delivery order stays with the staff who run it and moves through its own steps as usual. If the food is ready before the money, the same thing happens the other way round when payment is taken.

Can a cook undo a Ready by mistake?

Yes. 'Bring back the last one' puts the order back on the board with its dishes unticked, for the moment somebody says Ready and then sees the chips still in the fryer.

How does table QR ordering fit with tabs?

A guest who scans the code on their table orders from their seat with no address step, and their order opens that table on your floor: it stops being free and the tile shows the amount. Tap it and you see what they ordered, then add to it or take the money like any other table.

How do I make QR codes for tables?

Every table gets its own scan link the moment you add it, and Settings → Tables & QR ordering → QR design & print pack turns them into cards you can print. Colours, a caption, three card styles and an optional logo, with a contrast check that refuses any pair a phone camera would struggle with.

A QR card has gone missing. What do I do?

Find that table under Settings → Tables & QR ordering and press New code. Every card ever printed for that one table stops working immediately, and no other table is affected. Reprint that table from the pack.

Can guests book a table on my ordering page?

Yes. When bookings are on, a Book a table button appears on your ordering page and takes the guest to a booking form at your own address followed by /book. They choose how many people, a day, a time and give a name, and the booking lands on your Reservations & waitlist page.

Why is there no Book a table button on my ordering page?

One of two reasons, and Settings → Tables & QR ordering says which at the top of the page. Either table booking is not part of your plan (it is Growth and above), or you have no tables switched on yet. Add one table and the button appears within a minute.

Do I need tables switched on before I can take bookings?

Yes, at least one. A booking is a promise of a table, and promising one when none is listed is a promise nobody can keep. It is also the same table list the floor plan and the QR codes are built from, so it is never wasted work.

How far ahead can a guest book, and how many people?

Up to 120 days ahead, and up to 12 people online. Bigger parties are asked to call you, which is deliberate: a table of 20 is a conversation, not a form. You can enter any size yourself, up to 60.

What times can a guest pick?

Today, Tomorrow or Pick a day, then a lunch and dinner set of half-hour times, plus an 'Other time' door for anything else. Every time shown is the restaurant's own clock, whatever clock the guest's phone is on, and the page says so under the button.

What does the guest have to give me?

A name, and that is all that is required. A WhatsApp number and one free line for notes (a birthday, a high chair, a window seat) are offered and optional. There is no account and no password to book.

Does the booking page check whether I am full?

No. It records what the guest asked for and shows it to you; it does not count covers, read your opening hours or hold a specific table. You decide what to accept, and you give a booking a table when you seat it. Treat the page as the diary at the front desk, not a machine that says no on your behalf.

Does anybody get a message when a booking is made?

Yes, three people. Your managers' WhatsApp group gets the booking the moment it is made: the booking number (B-12), when, how many, the name, the phone and any note. You also get the same by email. And the guest gets a confirmation on WhatsApp with their booking number. One thing to know about the guest's message: WhatsApp only lets a business write to somebody who has written to it first, so the booking page asks the guest to send you a hello and gives them a button that does it. Their confirmation waits up to fifteen minutes for that hello and goes the moment it arrives. If they never write, it is not sent, and the booking is still in your list either way.

A guest said hello but their name is hidden on WhatsApp. How do I match them to their booking?

The same way you match a hidden name to an order. The hello lands in the WhatsApp box beside your orders board. If their message quotes the booking number (the hello button on the booking page puts it in for them), it matches on its own and their confirmation goes. If it does not, type their booking number (B-12), their order number, or their phone number into the box next to the message and press Pair. From then on that hidden name is that guest.

Where do I see and manage bookings?

Orders → Reservations & waitlist. Pick a day and you get that day's bookings in time order, with the covers counted, how many are booked ahead and how many are waiting now. Each booking has Seat (with a table to choose), No-show and Cancel, and anything you get wrong has an Undo.

Can I take a booking over the phone myself?

Yes. The same page has a Book form at the bottom: name, people, when, phone, a table if you want to give one, and notes. It goes in the same list as the ones guests make, and each row says which way it arrived.

Do bookings show on the waiter's screen?

Yes, when you give the booking a table. A free table shows its next booking on the tile in copper, as the time, the name and the party size, from three hours before until an hour after, so nobody seats a walk-in on a table that is promised.

How does the waitlist work?

Add the person at the door with a name, how many they are and a phone number. They sit as Waiting, with the minutes counting up. When a table frees, press Call. When they arrive, press Seat and pick the table. If they give up, press Left.

What does the guest get when I press Call?

A WhatsApp saying their table is ready and asking them to come to the host within ten minutes. It goes out through the same message lane as every other customer message, so your pause switch and your message log apply to it unchanged. Somebody with no phone number is simply marked as called.

Is the booking page listed on Google?

No, and that is on purpose. The way to it is the Book a table button on your own ordering page, which is the page you want people to find. The booking page itself is deliberately kept out of search results.

Can somebody spam my booking page?

It is limited: only a handful of bookings can be made from one connection each hour, and there is a hidden trap on the form that bots fill in and people never see. A booking that trips it is quietly thrown away.

What do I need on my plan for all this?

Two different things. Tables, QR codes, the floor plan, bookings and the waitlist need dine-in on your plan, which is Growth and above. Tabs, rounds, split bills, the kitchen screen and waiter phones run on paired devices, and devices need the POS add-on, which is a yearly add-on on top of your plan. Your Plan & billing page shows both.

What happens to my tables if the POS add-on lapses?

The devices stop selling and say so, but they stay paired and nothing on them is lost. Renew it and they start again at once, with nothing to set up and nobody to re-pair. Your tables, QR ordering, bookings and the waitlist are part of your plan, not the add-on, so they keep working either way.

Can two waiters work the same table at once?

Yes. A device showing the floor asks for the room again every fifteen seconds, and every change answers with the whole room rather than a patch, so a round sent on one phone is on the other one and on the counter within seconds. The only thing that is refused is two open tabs on one table.

How do I close a table nobody ordered from?

Press Close this table. A table that was opened by mistake with nothing on it simply goes away, and it does not turn up later in your cancelled orders pretending to be a lost sale.

How do I cancel a table that has food on it?

You cannot close it away like an empty one. Either take the payment, or have a manager cancel the sale, which is recorded as a cancellation with a reason. That is the point: food that was cooked should never quietly vanish from the day's numbers.

Does the guest need an app for any of this?

No. Guests use a phone camera on the QR card and a web page for booking. Your staff use the Get Menu POS app on Android tablets and phones, one for the counter, one on the kitchen wall and one in a waiter's apron pocket if you want tableside ordering.
